Turkmenistan discuss with the EU the possibility of gas supplies

Turkmenistan is discussing the possibility to diversify gas exports and the sale of gas to European Union countries, said President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on Monday during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The former Soviet republic has one of the world's largest natural gas reserves and is actively discussing the sale of gas to China in recent months, India and Afghanistan.

According to the Turkmen leader, the country also hopes to sell gas to Europe and is in talks with EU leaders in order to resolve the legal and technical issues.

"Turkmenistan is interested in the supply of energy resources to the West"- Berdymukhamedov said, adding that the government has submitted to the European Commission of its proposals for further action.

Turkmen gas supplies to the EU will be carried out through the Caspian Sea, which will also require permission from the Russian and Turkish.

Merkel expressed the hope that the problems that prevent the import of gas from Turkmenistan, can be solved.

"I hope that all the remaining problems can be overcome", - she said.

Competing gas supplies from Turkmenistan could reach previously frozen project implementation "Turkish stream"Negotiations which resumed in view of rapprochement between Russia and Turkey.
